Descent to the Underworld: Mythic Journeys to the Unconscious with Alyssa Polizzi

Sunday, November 22nd from 2 to 4 PM ET via Zoom Descent myths are symbolic expressions of our harrowing encounters with the unconscious. They depict the archetypal movement into the dark underworld of the psyche during times of crisis, instability, loss, or profound inward reflection. Though often painful and disorienting, these descents serve the process of transformation and eventual renewal, the gifts of which can only be received if the demands of the underworld are met.

In this workshop, we will explore the mythological descents of Persephone, Orpheus, and Psyche, uncovering the psychological themes and archetypal insights embedded in their stories. Each reveals a distinct way of meeting the unconscious: Persephone descends involuntarily and emerges as both maiden and queen; Orpheus willingly enters in search of what has been lost, though he struggles with the limitations; and Psyche is guided, a central task as part of her trials of individuation.
