Starting In 1921, Jung described a theory of personality types that categorized personalities by assessing three dichotomies of personal preference, most notably the introversion-extroversion binary. In the 1940s Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers extended Jung's theory, adding a fourth dichotomy, and they developed practical tests and methods of applying Jung's concepts in real life so as to help people understand and constructively cope with each others' differences.
The underlying assumption is that differences in personalities are not just due to random chance from a myriad of possibilities but rather derive from four innate psychological dispositions, yielding 16 basic personality types…
