Psyche’s Lounge 2023: A Panel on Jung’s Contributions to Current Events and Challenges
with Dick Sweeney, Teresa Arendell, Richard Bouchard & Donald Kalsched
Friday, September 22nd, 2023 | 6 to 9 pm
Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick, Maine
Open to Members and their Guests | $30
Jung once said in a BBC interview “The world hangs by a thin thread, and that thread is the psyche of man.” Yet commentators on our many contemporary social and political conflicts rarely discuss the underlying psychological factors. In this special, member-exclusive event, four local analysts will present brief reflections on the relevance of Jung’s ideas to our current, troubling situation in the country and the world. We are honored to be joined by local analysts Dick Sweeney, Teresa Arendell, Rick Bouchard, and Donald Kalsched as they employ the timeless wisdom of Jungian thought to answer and dissect questions as they emerge from the collective unconscious. The evening will begin with a “social hour” with coffee and refreshments being served, and will then transition into the panel discussion, with plenty of time allocated for a rich discussion as well as audience questions.
Dick Sweeney, Ph.D, IAAP, is a Jungian analyst, an associate professor, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, and a former Roman Catholic priest. He holds a Master of Arts in English literature from Xavier University, and master’s degrees in both philosophy and theology from the Athenaeum of Ohio’s Mount St. Mary’s Seminary. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati where he remained for 19 years. During that time he received his doctorate in Psychology and Religion from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.
Teresa Arendell, PhD, IAAP, is a Maine-based Jungian analyst who trained at the C. G. Jung Institute – Boston. She has offered courses and lectures and served on committees at the Maine Jung Center, the C. G. Jung Institute – Boston, and other Jungian associations. She was a college professor in sociology for over three decades and held multiple postdoctoral fellowships. Teresa is currently working on a book exploring Jungian thought and practice in relation to climate devastation.
Rick Bouchard, LCSW, IAAP, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in Southern Maine. He is a Jungian analyst having graduated from the C. G. Jung Institute of New England (then the C. G. Jung Institute of Boston) where he serves on the faculty and as the Director of Training. He is in a doctoral program in Modern Psychoanalysis at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, currently ABD, and working on his dissertation on the Indian caste system and Untouchables (Dalits) who have emigrated to the United States, focusing on psychological defenses.
Donald Kalsched, PhD, IAAP, is a Jungian psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist. He is a senior faculty member and supervisor with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, and teaches and leads workshops nationally and internationally. His celebrated book, The Inner World of Trauma: Archetypal Defenses of the Personal Spirit, explores the interface between contemporary psychoanalytic theory and Jungian theory as it relates to clinical work with survivors of early childhood trauma. His recent book, Trauma and the Soul: A Psycho-Spiritual Approach to Human Development and its Interruption, explores the mystical dimensions of clinical work with trauma survivors.
